Taking a look at dooring accidents

bkabritsor • Apr 26, 2024

Dooring accidents, also known as getting “doored,” occur when a driver or passenger in a parked vehicle opens their door into the path of an oncoming cyclist, motorcyclist or other road user. These accidents can result in serious injuries and even fatalities.

New Paragraph

Bicyclist safety

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that more than 130,000 cyclists suffer injuries in accidents every year. For cyclists, staying safe on the road means being vigilant and anticipating the unexpected. Always assume that a parked car may open its door at any moment. Keep a safe distance from parked vehicles, ideally at least three feet, to give yourself more reaction time in case a door suddenly swings open.

Whenever possible, ride in designated bike lanes or paths to reduce the risk of encountering parked cars. Be cautious even in bike lanes, as some drivers may still open their doors without checking for cyclists. Look for signs that a vehicle is occupied, such as brake lights, reverse lights or someone sitting in the driver’s seat. These indicators can help you anticipate when a door might open.

Drivers and accident prevention

For drivers, preventing dooring accidents is a matter of practicing caution and mindfulness when parking and exiting a vehicle. Before opening your car door, check your side and rearview mirrors for approaching cyclists or vehicles. Open the door slowly and cautiously to allow time for any passing cyclists to react. If you are a passenger in a vehicle, remind others to check for cyclists before opening the door. Encourage everyone to be mindful of their surroundings to prevent accidents.

By following these simple guidelines and being aware of the risks associated with dooring accidents, both cyclists and drivers can contribute to a safer road environment for everyone. Remember, a moment of carelessness can have serious consequences.
